Burwood Blues Sydney, wins Bangkok Tens title.


On a thrilling action-packed day studded with brilliant tries, Burwood Blues withstood all the tests and captured the Cup at the Raimon Land Bangkok International Rugby Tens. The Burwood Blues celebrate winning the Raimon Land Bangkok Rugby Tens tournament at Bangkok Patana School yesterday.

Burwood Blues, a  rugby team from Sydney, beat the New Zealand Legends in the final 12-7 after a scoreless first half, which saw both teams pressing hard to break the deadlock.

Finally it was Burwood which struck the first blow when James Lagiloa notched an unconverted try in the 17th minute.

Two minutes later Vick Reil raised a big cheer from Burwood supporters when he touched down with a brilliant try and made the conversion himself.

In the last minute, Jimmy Marks notched a consolation try for the New Zealand Legends, which Nick Fisher converted.

But their rally came too late.

Thus Burwood Blues, proved that they were deserved winners of the championship trophy. The tournament started on Saturday Feb, 21-22 and they were in top form throughout the tournament.

In the semi-finals they defeated Saffa’s from Dubai.

Earlier in the quarter-finals they eliminated last year’s champions, Jam Boys from South Africa 33-0 and proved that they were worthy of winning the Championship title.

In the Shield competition Nakhon Pathom did exceptionally well to capture the honours, beating the French Asian Barbarians 35-5.

Right from the first round until the final they played outstanding rugby and were rewarded for their efforts.

The Bowl was won by Grammar Carlton who beat Bangkok Japanese 38-7 after leading 12-7 in the first half.

The Thai Barbarians did well to beat the Bangkok Bangers 24-7 to capture the Plate, after leading 12-7 at half-time.

A second minute try by Liwi Steve which was converted by Martin Kirk. Tula Chimsawan tied the score with a beautiful try by Tula Chinsuwan which Piroon Thayasiri converted.

Inspired by their equalising effort the Thai Barbarians attacked all the way and crossed Bangers Colts goalline three times and raised their score to 24- 7.

Their star Tula scored two more tries, and the other was scored by Sirichai Dao-thrisong, one of which Piroon converted.

In the Cup competition, all matches were well contested right from the first round.

Even the quarter-finals witnessed some exciting encounters.

The Singapore Barbarians who made an impressive start, went up to the quarter-finals and beat the Red Dot rebels 15-0. Saffa’s beat Thai Legends 10-5; Burwood Blues beat Jam Boys 33-0; NZ Legends beat YCAC Japan 7-5.

In the semi-finals NZ Legends beat Singapore Barbarians 17-12.

All teams agreed it was a well organised tournament and have promised to return next year.
