A MAN is dead and an elderly woman in hospital after a fire ripped through a house and granny flat in Sydney’s south west early today. When fire and ambulance officers arrived at the Seven Hills home just before 3am it was already engulfed by flames.

The fire was so intense that despite desperate attempts by firefighters to access both the home and an an adjoining granny flat on the Orinoco Close property, they were unable to reach the man.

It is believed the man is aged in his thirties and was trapped inside the granny flat.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An elderly woman was also injured in the blaze and taken to Blacktown Hospital suffering smoke inhalation and shock.

Investigators are examining whether insulation was to blame for the fire.

A neighbour said he had to coax the elderly woman out of her home.

“She was still inside, on the telephone to the fire brigade, so I told her to come out onto the front grass and she just said her son was still inside,” a neighbour told Macquarie Radio today.
