Police to help traffic along Suva/Nausori corridor

What is causing the huge traffic jam along the Suva/Nausori corridor in the mornings and afternoons?

Police are now stepping up operations to find this out as officers now assess on a daily basis the reasons for the traffic jam.

This will come as music to the ears for motorists, workers, and students who use the corridor daily to travel to and from work and school in the city or town areas.

Police Operations Director, Senior Superintendent Police Rusiate Tudravu said the traffic exercise was aimed at cutting down the travel time through the corridor.

He said there would be traffic conductors stationed at specific points along the corridor.

SSP Tudravu said this was part of normal operations for the force and they would look to strengthen initiatives already in place to manage traffic in the corridor

“Where we have areas with double lanes followed by a bottleneck, we will try to make temporary double lanes using traffic cones to allow traffic to flow faster,” he said.

SSP Tudravu said the operation started yesterday morning and would continue as the police get progressively better at managing traffic flow.

“We want to see whether our intervention in this area will help ease the traffic or whether the traffic lights and motorists will be able to manage without us,” he said.

Director of Operations, Rusiate Tudravu said the purpose of the exercise is to reduce the time of travel along the Suva/Nausori corridor.

Fijivillage  asked Tudravu whether the officers will ensure that members of the force do not delay the traffic even further by stepping in.

He said their people will be told to avoid any further delays.
