Interpol sought to find Nemani

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has sought the assistance of Interpol New Zealand to help serve the summons of former deputy general manager on the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), Foana Nemani.

FICAC prosecutor Shalini Sanmogam informed High Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando that attempts to get Nemani’s brother and sister to contact her proved futile therefore they had sought the assistance of Interpol.

Earlier, the High Court heard that FICAC was working with police and the Immigration Department to locate Nemani because she was not present when her name was called and was believed to be away in New Zealand.

Justice Fernando queried Nemani’s absence from court to which FICAC lawyer Shalini Sanmorgan replied that they were liaising with local authorities to locate her.

Nemani and former general manager of FNPF Olota Rokovunisei each face charges of extortion by public officers and abuse of office.

They were alleged to have defrauded FNPF by authorising payments of responsibility allowances for each other; the sum of $33,333 to Rokovunisei and $35,911 to Nemani without authorisation in 2006.

The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2012 for mention to check on the progress of the arrangement between the two parties.
