All buses to use e-ticketing machines by October 1st

busfijis1st October this year is the deadline for all buses and passengers to be using e-ticketing machines.

Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum has had a meeting with the Fiji Bus Operators Association and Vodafone Fiji to discuss protocol issues and other aspects relating to electronic ticketing.

Sayed-Khaiyum called on the bus operators and Vodafone to work together and be solution‑driven for the commencement of e‑ticketing from 1st August this year.

He says after 1st August, the law allows the stakeholders 60 days to make adjustments.

For 60 days both e‑ticketing and cash system will be allowed but from 1st October, everybody will be using e‑ticketing.

Vodafone Fiji says the e‑ticketing machines will arrive on the third week of this month.

The e‑ticketing cards, which will be distributed for free, will also be arriving soon and Vodafone will start registration with schools and other customers.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the interest of the travelling public must be protected at all times.

Fiji Bus Operators Association President Richard Lal is expected to comment on the preparations for the e-ticketing system later this week.

Vodafone Fiji CEO Pradeep Lal says they will have 1600 e‑ticketing terminals made available for people to top up their cards.

They will have the tap‑on system with driver intervention.

Lal also confirms that the cards for school students will be different.

In the next few weeks, they will create awareness and educate customers about the processes.

Lal also confirms that temporary or disposable cards will also be made available for tourists.

Two of the providers engaged for the e‑ticketing system, Digicel and Bula Mai Fiji have pulled out.

Meanwhile the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vodafone which means that it can access information on the bus e‑ticketing database.

FRCA had earlier said that this would mean that the Authority would access the database to extract details of daily sales of bus companies if they feel the need to ascertain the financial status of a bus company.
