Bad news for thong-lovers

thongThongs have long been a feature of the Australian summer, but podiatrists have bad news for people who love the feel of rubber between their toes.

Along with obvious problems like blisters, sunburn, cuts, broken nails, or stubbing a toe, it turns out thongs really are horrible for your feet.

Dr Christina Long, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina, says thongs actually alter your natural stride.

They can cause serious injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis — which is a painful inflammation of the tendon that connects the ball of your foot with the heel, and even lower back pain.

“Flip-flops don’t offer any arch or heel support, and you have to grip them with your toes to keep them on,” she told the Daily Mail.

“Wearing them for too long or for the wrong activity can cause a lot of different problems.”
