Viral social media post reunites potential owner with lost ring

ringsElizabeth Docherty says she was enjoying her “babymoon” on the vast sand dunes of the Simpson Desert, taking photographs, when she realised her wedding ring was gone.

So she could hardly believed it when a family member tagged her on an ABC Facebook viral post saying a ring had been found in the desert near Birdsville.

Since Tuesday morning, nearly 5,000 people have shared a Facebook post from ABC Western Queensland attempting to reunite the ring with its rightful owner.

More than 1,700 kilometres away, in Kandos, New South Wales, Mrs Docherty said as soon as she saw the post she knew the ring was hers.

“My sister-in-law tagged me in a post on Facebook and called me to have a look at this post that the ABC had put up, but I couldn’t believe it,” Mrs Docherty said.

“It was my wedding band that I had lost over on Big Red in June.

In typical outback Queensland fashion, Mrs Docherty’s story cannot be verified until Birdsville’s sole police officer returns from the Simpson Desert and gains mobile reception.

But Mrs Docherty said she was confident the ring was hers.

“We took a photo of the bottom of the sand dune, and you can see the ring on my finger,” she said.

While this is the second time Mrs Docherty has lost and found her ring, she said this discovery came at a perfect time.

“My fingers are swelling up and down because we’re having a baby in September — our first child, and this couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said.

“That was our ‘babymoon’, and our anniversary that I lost it.”

“I’m just thrilled — it couldn’t have come at a better time. As you can imagine, I’m pretty emotional as it is these days.”

While Mrs Docherty waits for police confirmation, she said she wants to thank every person who helped share the news of the rings discovery.

“To everyone that shared it and commented, every single person did something to get that towards me, so thank you so much,” she said.
