Fijian chiefs could face challenge for replacing yaqona ceremony with church service

chiefTwo newly installed chiefs in Fiji who declined to have the traditional yaqona drinking as part of the ceremony could face challenges to their position in future.

That’s according to Dr Tui Rakuita from the University of the South Pacific.

He said both the Tui Nadi and the Roko Tui Bau replaced the kava ceremony with a Christian ceremony in a church, and this could be used by challengers who might argue that they were not properly made chiefs according to Fijian custom and protocol.
