FIJI WINS $300,000 AND A PLACE IN THE SEMI-FINAL.
Fiji Bati advanced into the semi-final of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup after defeating Ireland 30-14 in their sudden-death semi-final qualifier on the Gold Coast, Australia.
As well as a guranteed prizemoney of $300,000 for going through to the semi-finals, the Fijians last night earned themselves a crack at the all-conquering World champions, Australia after crushing Ireland 30-14 in a hard fought battle in their pool decider.
Although behind at the break, Ireland served up the first half highlight with their opening try after just eight minutes. Fiji knew they had to overcome the mistake of taking Scotland lightly in their earlier encounter to cement a spot in the World Cup semi-final— and they did.
Fiji will now meet with the Australian (Kangaroos) in the second semi-final on Sunday in Sydney. In the other matches, Samoa beat France 42-10 at Penrith Stadium last night but a lot of rugby followers rated Fiji higher than their fellow Pacific Island nations of Tonga, Samoa and Papua New Guinea in terms of enthusiasm, overall fitness and skills.
So it will be a great semi-final showdown come Sunday and I bet all Fijians will be there in full force to cheer and support the Mighty Fijians…
